What to track in GA4: fewer metrics, better decisions

A useful GA4 report does not show everything that happened; it shows enough to decide what to keep, what to fix and where to invest next.

A marketing team in a green analytics room selects a few important golden signals from a large field of data.

GA4 can display hundreds of dimensions and metrics, but reporting breadth is not the same as clarity. If a weekly review starts with users, moves through ten channels and ends without a decision, the problem is not missing data. It is missing hierarchy.

A useful measurement system connects the business outcome, the behaviour that precedes it and the quality of collection. That turns GA4 into a management tool rather than an archive of charts.

Start with the business outcome

For ecommerce, primary outcomes include purchases, revenue, margin and repeat buying. In a B2B service business, they may be a qualified enquiry, booked meeting, accepted proposal and won deal. GA4 need not be the only source of truth: the sales outcome often belongs in the CRM or accounting system, while GA4 explains the digital journey towards it.

Arrange metrics in three levels:

  1. Business outcome: revenue, qualified leads, acquisition cost or customer value.
  2. Leading signals: viewing a key service, beginning checkout, submitting a form or returning to an important page.
  3. Diagnostics: channel, campaign, landing page, device, funnel step and technical error.

If a metric changes no decision and explains no problem, it does not belong in the main review.

Track key events, not every click

Google defines a key event as an event that measures an action particularly important to business success. Any collected event can be marked as key, but that does not make every scroll or click a meaningful outcome [1].

For each key event, record an owner, purpose, expected value and validation method. A purchase, a successfully submitted qualified enquiry or a confirmed appointment has clear weight. A phone click or document download may be a useful leading signal, but it is not automatically equal to the final outcome.

Google now distinguishes GA4 key events for analysing behaviour and journeys from conversions for cross-channel measurement and media decisions [2]. Reports should therefore say whether they show an event occurrence, an attributed result or an actual sale from the business system.

Separate first acquisition from every new session

User acquisition explains how a user first arrived. Traffic acquisition reports the source of each session, including return visits. Google warns that the reports have different scopes and their values should not be compared as if they measured the same thing [3].

Track new users and first channel, sessions and key events by session channel, revenue or qualified leads by campaign, and the balance of new and returning users in the context of your model. Do not judge a channel by traffic alone. A smaller channel may produce more revenue, better leads or a shorter sales cycle.

Landing pages connect acquisition and experience

The Landing page report shows the first page in a session and lets you compare entry pages [4]. Review sessions, engagement, key events and revenue together, then segment by channel and device.

High traffic with a weak outcome can indicate a mismatch between ad and page, an unclear next step, a slow mobile experience or informational rather than commercial intent. A lower-volume page with many qualified enquiries may deserve more budget or internal links.

Revenue and lead quality must leave the GA4 bubble

For ecommerce, track purchases, purchasers, revenue, refunds, average order value and item performance. The official Ecommerce purchases report shows the products or services sold when ecommerce measurement is implemented correctly [5].

For lead generation, do not stop at generate_lead. Connect the permitted digital signal to CRM stages: qualified, proposal sent, won or lost. Form volume without quality can reward a campaign that creates work but not revenue.

Reconcile GA4 with WooCommerce, Stripe, the CRM and accounting. Differences are expected because of consent, blocking, time zones, refunds and definitions; the important point is to know their cause and acceptable tolerance.

Data quality is a metric

DebugView shows events and user properties as Analytics collects them on devices with debug mode enabled [6]. Use it whenever a form, checkout, Consent Mode or Google Tag Manager setup changes.

Weekly checks should cover (not set), unusual direct traffic growth, duplicate purchases, disappearing revenue, consent-rate shifts and differences from the business system. Check the data-quality indicator too: GA4 may apply thresholds to prevent sensitive information being inferred from small groups [7].

A weekly review that ends with a decision

A one-page review can cover:

  • outcome: revenue, purchases or qualified leads against target and prior period
  • acquisition: three channels contributing most to the outcome, not merely traffic
  • experience: landing pages and funnel steps with the biggest loss or improvement
  • quality: measurement status, anomalies and reconciliation with business data
  • decision: one to three actions, each with an owner and deadline.

Add cohorts, repeat purchases, longer sales cycles and cost comparisons monthly. Reserve daily monitoring for active campaigns, technical failures and events requiring fast action.

A 30-day GA4 measurement plan

In week one, define business outcomes and owners. In week two, audit events, consent and ecommerce or lead implementation. In week three, build a compact report around outcomes, leading signals and diagnostics. In week four, run the first meeting where every chart must end with a decision.

The goal is not a perfect dashboard. It is a measurement system in which people trust definitions, understand limitations and use data to make a better next decision.

Frequently asked questions

Which three metrics should I track first in GA4?

Choose one business outcome, one leading signal and one data-quality metric. The precise choices depend on whether you sell online, generate leads or build repeat usage.

Is engagement rate more important than bounce rate?

Neither is a goal on its own. Use them diagnostically alongside the landing page, visitor intent and business outcome.

Should every form be a key event?

No. Mark only forms representing an important business step as key events and keep the rest as regular events.

Why does GA4 revenue differ from WooCommerce or Stripe?

Consent, tag blocking, time zones, refunds, cancellations, duplicates and different definitions can all create differences.

How often should GA4 be reviewed?

Technical anomalies and live campaigns may need daily checks, business decisions a weekly review, and cohorts or long-term trends a monthly analysis.
