SEO in the age of AI answers: how to create content that helps users and remains visible in search

Keep useful answers, reliable information and sound SEO foundations at the centre of your search visibility strategy.

Search is no longer simply a list of links. A user can ask a complex question, receive a generated summary and continue with follow-up questions. That does not make SEO obsolete. It does make it harder to build visibility with pages that merely repeat information already available elsewhere.

In May 2026, Google published dedicated guidance for optimizing for generative AI experiences in Search. Its message is notably unexciting — and useful: established SEO fundamentals still matter. Google says no special AI markup or machine-readable AI file is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Valuable, unique content, crawlability, internal linking and a good page experience remain central. [1], [2]

Start with questions you can answer better

Instead of publishing pages simply because a keyword has search volume, ask:

What can we explain more accurately, usefully or concretely than what already exists?

For an agency, that might mean explaining how to judge whether SEO is commercially worthwhile in a small market, rather than publishing another generic definition of SEO. For an ecommerce business, it could mean original compatibility information, measurements, comparisons, photography or answers based on real pre-purchase questions.

Google's people-first guidance emphasizes original information and analysis, first-hand expertise and whether readers leave feeling they have learned enough to achieve their goal. [3]

Give a direct answer, then earn the reader's attention

Writing clearly does not mean reducing every page to machine-friendly definitions.

A useful section can begin with a direct answer, then explain conditions, evidence, limitations and practical implications. “SEO does not have a guaranteed payback period” is clear. The expertise lies in explaining what affects that period, what should be measured and when SEO may not be the first channel a business should fund.

Brevity and depth are not opposites.

Add what cannot easily be reconstructed from a hundred similar pages

Useful differentiators include original data, first-hand experience, a transparent methodology, genuine examples, original visuals, informed comparisons, local knowledge and an explanation of where advice does not apply.

Not every article needs proprietary research. Sometimes originality means answering a real customer question exceptionally well.

Be sceptical of invented “GEO hacks”

Google currently says there is no special schema.org markup, AI file or other new machine-readable requirement for appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Existing fundamentals apply: allow crawling, make important pages discoverable through internal links, keep important information available as text, provide a good page experience and ensure structured data reflects visible content. [2]

Structured data remains useful for supported Search features and for helping systems understand specific information, but adding more markup is not an automatic route into an AI answer. [4]

AI can support content production. Scale is not a substitute for value

Google does not classify content as spam simply because generative AI was involved. Its guidance focuses on accuracy, quality and relevance. It also suggests providing context about automation when readers could reasonably care how content was created. [5]

The risk appears when automation is used to manufacture large volumes of unoriginal content primarily to manipulate Search. Google's spam policies explicitly apply to attempts to manipulate generative AI responses in Search as well. [6]

Technical SEO still matters

Make sure important URLs can be crawled and indexed, internal links expose useful pages, essential information exists in text, the mobile experience works well, relevant images and video are high quality and structured data matches the page users actually see. These are among Google's current recommendations for AI Search features. [2]

AI visibility is becoming more measurable

On 3 June 2026, Google announced dedicated Search Console reporting for visibility in generative AI Search experiences such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says those reports had rolled out to all websites worldwide by 31 August 2026. In September, Search Console also added reporting for multimodal searches such as Lens and image-based Search interactions. [7], [8]

SEO reporting can therefore move beyond a single ranking position.

Connect:

visibility → visits → useful engagement → leads/sales → business outcomes.

What should businesses do now?

Audit pages that already answer important customer questions. Correct outdated claims. Add evidence, experience and useful detail. Make answers easy to locate without stripping away context. Strengthen internal linking. Check technical accessibility. Then measure both traditional and generative Search visibility against commercial outcomes.

The most important change may not be a new optimization technique at all. It is a higher bar for content worth paying attention to.

If a generic answer is available without visiting your site, the reason to visit needs to be stronger: evidence, experience, detail, data, a useful comparison, a tool or a meaningful next step.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need separate GEO or AEO optimization for AI Overviews?

Google does not currently require a separate technical layer, AI schema or AI file. Established SEO fundamentals remain applicable. [1], [2]

Is an FAQ section still useful for SEO?

It can be useful for readers and information architecture, but not as a shortcut to an FAQ rich result: Google deprecated FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026. [9]

Can AI be used to write SEO content?

Yes. The tool itself is not the core issue. Accuracy, original value, editorial oversight and user benefit matter. Scaled low-value content created to manipulate rankings can violate spam policies. [5], [6]

Can a business guarantee inclusion in an AI Overview or AI Mode?

No. Google explicitly says indexing and serving are not guaranteed. [2]
