SEO builds technical accessibility, relevance and trust across classic and AI search. GEO adds a practical question: can a generative system understand, extract and cite your content accurately? For most brands, the answer is not SEO or GEO. It is a strong SEO foundation with content designed to provide clear, verifiable answers.
Why GEO became a useful term
SEO covers discovery, indexing and visibility in search results. GEO, or generative engine optimization, is a label for work aimed at visibility in generated answers such as AI Overviews, AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT search.
The interface has changed, but the link to search has not disappeared. Google’s 2026 guidance says its generative features are rooted in core ranking and quality systems. They use retrieval from the Search index and may apply query fan-out, running several related searches to build a broader answer. [1]
Content that cannot be reliably crawled, indexed or understood is unlikely to become a dependable source. GEO will not repair blocked crawling, incorrect canonicals, inaccessible JavaScript or a page with no clear subject.
Google’s position: GEO does not replace SEO
For Google, optimizing for generative search is still SEO. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, but there is no additional technical requirement, special AI schema or mandatory AI file. Google explicitly says that llms.txt, special Markdown and new machine-readable formats are not required for its AI features. [2]
That does not mean nothing has changed. Conversational queries can open multiple subtopics, compare sources and place links inside a synthesized answer. The practical response is to define the audience and task clearly, state important facts and limitations directly, show sources and methodology, add original evidence, and keep brand, service, product and location information consistent.
Google continues to recommend helpful, reliable, people-first content and warns against scaled publishing that adds little value. [3]
What GEO adds to day-to-day work
GEO is useful as a quality-control layer on top of SEO. It asks not only whether a page ranks, but whether a system can reproduce its claims accurately and attribute them to the right source.
- Answer clarity: introductions, headings and definitions make the subject easy to understand without forcing every paragraph into an artificial “AI chunk”. Google says special chunking is not required.
- Evidence: original research, real projects, methods, examples and limitations create a reason to cite the page.
- Unambiguous entities: the company, author, service, product and location remain consistent in copy and structured data.
- Freshness: facts, links and offers are updated, not merely the displayed date.
- A useful next step: the page offers a tool, assessment, detailed comparison or service worth visiting after a short answer.
AI systems do not share one rulebook
Applying one universal GEO tactic across platforms is a mistake. Google uses its Search index and established SEO foundations. Since February 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools has offered AI Performance in public preview, including total citations, average cited pages, sampled grounding queries and URL-level citation activity. Microsoft notes that citations do not indicate rank, authority or placement inside an answer. [5]
OpenAI separates search discovery from potential model training. OAI-SearchBot controls inclusion in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot is a separate signal concerning potential use in training foundation models. The two robots.txt settings are independent. [6]
This distinction matters more than any universal file. Check robots.txt, the CDN, WAF and server logs for the platform-specific crawler. Do not assume that opting out of training is the same as opting out of search visibility.
Measuring SEO and GEO together
Use one measurement framework:
- Accessibility: indexing, crawl errors, canonicals, status codes and permissions for relevant bots.
- Visibility: classic impressions and clicks, generative impressions, citations and source URLs.
- Brand demand: branded searches, direct visits and changes in interest after exposure.
- Visit quality: engaged sessions, enquiries, sales and assisted conversions.
- Business outcome: revenue, qualified leads, acquisition cost and contribution to the sales process.
Google introduced dedicated generative AI reports in Search Console on 3 June 2026 and announced worldwide availability on 31 August. The reports include impressions, pages, countries, devices and trends over time. [4]
A citation without a click may still build awareness, but it is not a conversion. Conversely, a lower organic CTR does not prove that a page has lost business value. Connect these signals with analytics, CRM data and cross-channel measurement.
A practical four-part framework
Foundation: fix technical SEO, architecture, internal linking, content accessibility and relevant structured data. Structured data describes visible content. It is not a shortcut to citations.
Evidence: publish what others do not have—project data, a documented process, expert input, measured results and limitations. Link factual claims to primary sources.
Distribution: keep information consistent across the website, business profiles, platforms, catalogues and relevant publications. Avoid manufactured mentions created only to “feed AI”.
Measurement: compare classic search, Google’s generative reports, Bing citations, ChatGPT referrals and business outcomes. Establish a baseline before changes and review trends by topic and landing page.
For the foundation, read SEO in the age of AI answers and AI Overviews, AI Mode and classic Google results.
Conclusion
SEO or GEO sounds like a strategic fork, but it is a false choice for most organisations. Without SEO there is no dependable technical access, structure or retrieval foundation. Without a GEO perspective, teams may overlook clarity, evidence and citation measurement in generated answers.
Keep SEO as the discipline connecting technology, content, authority and commercial outcomes. Use GEO as an additional readiness check for generative discovery and citation. Do not optimize for an acronym. Optimize for an accurate, useful and verifiable answer that a person can understand and a system can attribute to your brand.
Frequently asked questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. SEO foundations still underpin visibility, while GEO adds a useful lens for clarity, citation and measurement in AI answers.
Does Google require llms.txt?
No. Google says special AI files, Markdown and new markup are not required for its generative features.
Is there special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Use relevant existing structured data and keep it aligned with visible content.
How can we measure AI citations?
Search Console reports generative impressions and pages. Bing AI Performance reports citations and cited URLs. For ChatGPT, monitor referral traffic and important queries.
Can we allow ChatGPT search but block training?
Yes. OpenAI states that OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are independent controls.
What should a limited budget prioritize?
Fix indexing and technical barriers first, then improve high-value commercial pages with original evidence and measure their classic and generative visibility.
